Cash for Clunkers

Filed under: Misc. — Evan @ 6:50 am

Cash for clunkers is an outrageous program.  Before I stick my head in the sand again for some much needed R&R, I’m going to tell you what I think about it– from the perspective of an American small business owner, taxpayer, and patriot.

What’s happening to our country is overwhelming– simply too much for a single mind to grasp.  However, this is precisely what community organizers are good at doing: overwhelming the system.  It’s part of the plan.  How can you keep track of all the new programs, Czars (some are full fledged Commies), and bailouts? You can’t. It’s impossible.  So, before Glenn Beck and I have synchronized heart attacks, I’ll begin.  There goes the first bead of sweat on my brow, so I better be brief!

Cash for clunkers is an insane proposition.  Taxpayers are footing the bill, $4500 at a time, for people to buy new cars that they don’t need and probably can’t afford.  How does this do anything for our economy other than encourage/enable the same irresponsible bad behavior that got us in this mess in the first place?  Is it any different than loaning money for houses via sub prime mortgages?  Haven’t we seen this before?  Wait a minute– everything is okay!  I forgot. This is our government’s brilliant idea to save us.  They’re running the auto industry now.  Thank God– no wait, thank the Government!  False alarm– everything is okay! Or is it?

Here are some questions that nobody seems to be asking: Is this program creating any new jobs?  Heck, is it saving the fluffy and cuddly polar bears?  How is driving a brand new car that gets a mere 2 MPGs better than the old “clunker” good for the environment? Consider the amount of resources it takes to produce a new eco-friendly 22MPG vehicle– which is an oxymoron!  Isn’t the old “clunker” (aka perfectly good vehicle) better for the environment since it’s still in service?  How much does it cost to destroy these so-called clunkers?  Common sense tells me this is a Sham– and not the good kind that I use to dry my clunker after a wash.

My friends, I present to you my idea for spending $4500 of our tax quid.  It’s a simple idea and would work across the country.  Give the $4500 to small business owners.  If the government gave On Point Firearms $4500, I could create a job.  I could hire another worker and ramp them up to speed, make them productive and give them time  to pull their own weight– even in this sluggish economy.  $4500 is a nice buffer.  When I’m ready for another worker, give me another $4500 and I’ll get the hiring process started again.  That would create real jobs right now– all across the country.  $1 million dollars would create 222 small business jobs– little jobs on Main Street– jobs that you and I know matter.  $1 billion would create 222,000 jobs, right?  Well, that’s certainly better than losing hundreds of thousands of jobs EACH MONTH, right?

In the last few months, I’ve received about a hundred e-mails from clients that have lost their job.  Tell me, what exactly is the cash for clunkers program, or any other program for that matter, doing to get them a new job?  I’m telling you folks, if you’re not angry– you’re not paying attention.  Oops, there goes the second bead of sweat on my forehead.  Better go before I have a coronary.  Have a blessed Sunday morning.  I will talk to all of you later this week.

God bless.
